TRYP by Wyndham Wellington, Tory Street

We had a well equipped two-bedroom apartment for three people, with a modern feel and plenty of space. The reception and coffee area were a nice bonus, and the staff were friendly. Libie and the duty manager were particularly helpful with our request, and housekeeping were very friendly too. You get apartment space with hotel service at a decent rate, in a great location. A win all round.

The room was quiet and comfortable, with a good quality mini kitchen, washing machine and dryer that all worked well. Housekeeping were fantastic too, even finding my lost earbud and leaving it on its case. I came to Wellington with my elderly father for a family wedding, and we thoroughly enjoyed the stay at 15 Tory TRYP by Wyndham. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and well located, with great service. Christopher, Libie and Salma were the three check-in staff we saw regularly. They were all polite and friendly, and Salma went out of her way to help us. Thank you all for a great stay. I highly recommend the hotel if you want all you could ask for in a good location.

The rooms were clean, comfortable and stylish, and did a good job blocking out city noise and sounds from neighbouring guests. The hotel is right in the heart of Wellingtons entertainment quarter, with everything you might want in walking distance. Staff took great care with my accessibility needs and treated me with respect and dignity. The only drawback for drivers is the lack of onsite parking or a deal with nearby parking facilities.

Libie was an excellent host, thoughtful, efficient and welcoming. Selma, by contrast, made things harder than they needed to be. We wanted to leave early because of several problems, and Selma refused to end the stay early under our room policy, saying we had to return to the original room and that an exception had already been made. Libie was a gem: she found us a room with light while she could and arranged the early departure. Some rooms, especially accessible ones, have no windows. The website seemed to show windows behind curtains, despite past reviews saying the lack of windows was listed there. No windows is one thing, but giving a misleading impression isn’t okay, so be careful when booking. The lobby was unattended, and people could enter and reach most rooms without a key card. Given Wellington doesn’t feel as safe as it once did, that’s a concern and could conflict with corporate health and safety policies. Room access really should require a key card. There was a foul smell in the bathroom in the mornings. I suspect the recent renovations may be responsible: the excess drain pipe seems connected between rooms, and the S bend may not have water to block smells, so neighbours’ smells can come through. It sounds like an easy fix, but I don’t know why it hasn’t been done. Outside lights came into the room even with the curtains closed, and road noise was still audible. Fixing the tops of the curtain tracks might help. The building may be old, but the uneven flooring had gaps and the window seals were peeling. At this price, I’d expect better upkeep.
