The restaurant is privately owned, so there’s no Accor membership benefit there. The hotel itself is clean and quiet, even though some of the hardware is old, and there are USB charging ports all over. Staff were very helpful. The location is perfect, with food options everywhere. I wouldn’t mind coming back.

We left our bags early without any hassle and were told check-in started at 2pm. But on Waitangi weekend, 6-7 February 2026, we didn’t get into our room until 4.30pm. Several other groups were stuck waiting in the lobby for more than two hours too, even though the hotel was close to full with over 70 rooms occupied. The front-of-house team tried their best, but there was no manager on duty because it was a public holiday and long weekend. That kind of staffing decision doesn’t make sense when the hotel is so busy. A hotel operates all year, and management should plan around occupancy, whether it’s a wet Tuesday or a holiday, rather than sticking to a Monday-to-Friday roster. The one-star service rating is about the wait to get into our room. It doesn’t describe the later email exchange with the area manager for The Mercure and Central City Hotel and Apartments, which was prompt, attentive, and honest. They acknowledged what went wrong and said they’d prepared possible improvements, such as offering drinks to guests who are waiting. The start of our stay was very frustrating. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to others. If it does, management still has questions to answer. Enjoy your stay, and ka kite anō.

The room was clean, comfortable, and well cared for, and the staff were warm, professional, and ready to help. Being right in the centre made it easy to get to the main sights and amenities. I had a really pleasant stay and would gladly recommend the hotel.

The room was spotless, thanks to the housekeeping team, and the beds were comfortable after the recent refurbishment. The main drawback is the heat: there’s no air conditioning, so the room can get quite hot on summer days. The location is very central, an easy walk from Te Papa, The Cable Car, and Cuba Street.
