My wife says the bed was very comfortable and the towels super clean. She also loved the full service kitchen. I’m not sure what I know, but I’m with her! We checked out of 5-I on Sunday after a great night’s sleep, a hot shower with good pressure, hot chocolate with four creams, and some light classic rock on the big in-room TV. Owner John deserves a mention for being kind and accommodating. He helped a family who were running late by extending their parking, and quickly sorted out a walk-in stay for them too. That’s hospitality in spades. We travel a lot, and this place ticks the things we care about. Secure enclosed basement parking, free fast Wi-Fi for remote work, and a quiet apartment where we can focus, with the city right across the street. We even saw Wellington’s cable car coming down the tracks nearby. The front office team, especially Kaitlin and Jodie, were kind and capable, and know the area well if you catch them free from check-in duties. You can book through Booking, as most people do, or use Trip or Expedia. Rates vary a little, so pick what suits you. The kitchenette has what we need to cook lamb chops, make coffee or tea, heat noodles, and pop popcorn. Cross the street, take the twin elevators down to Lambton Quay, pass a barbershop and cafe, and after twenty five metres you’re at the shopping area. For food, there’s Thai Satay, Chinese Red Lantern on Willis st., and local favorite Whitbys Restaurant & bar across from QA at James Cook Hotel Grand. Whitbys has a cafe from 7am on weekdays, plus lunch and dinner on the 17th floor with a waterfront view. A renovation is underway, focused on one to three rooms at a time, and hasn’t been disruptive. The appliances, including the washer and refer, are fine, and the value per night keeps getting better. Thanks to Quest, the staff, and housekeeping. We’ve travelled well over a million miles, and truly feel we belong here. Continued success.
The bed’s comfortable, the sheets are clean, and the reception staff are lovely. They’ll give you milk if you run out, and the coffee is LaAfarre Primo. But I was awake at 2.50am on level 6, facing the atrium, where the level 7 lights kept flashing every 30 seconds. There was a sulphury smell from the bathroom, so I left the extractor on, and I could hear someone snoring. The Sky tv boxes didn’t work, so Freeview was all there was, and the TVs weren’t cast friendly. George Clarkes Amazing Spaces was the best option. The atrium balconies feel more like a sci-fi prison than somewhere to have morning coffee.
For what it is, this is a pleasant hotel, good value, in a great location, with very friendly staff. We were there for three weeks and it met our needs well. The two front desk staff we dealt with, Mikayla and the new member of staff, were welcoming and attentive. They handled requests, printed things for us, sorted out issues, and honestly added to the stay. The cleaners were lovely and replenished things in our room, though during a longer stay like ours we’d have liked a deeper clean, such as vacuuming and wiping down the bathroom, after each week or halfway through. The communal areas were tidy. Our hallway sometimes smelled of people’s cooking, and weekends could be a bit noisy despite the 10pm noise rule. The room had a nice bed, TV, sofa, air con, hob, and separate bathroom. The TV was awkward to watch from the sofa because it’s by the bed, and from the bed the angle wasn’t great, though still doable. There are only two hobs, and a frying pan covers the second one, so it can’t be used at the same time. A chopping board would’ve been handy. The downsides didn’t really affect our stay, but they’re useful to know. It’s not a five star hotel, but it’s a good fit for what it offers.
Handy for a short stay before a ferry the next day. We had everything we needed, including a small kitchen, shower, and in-unit laundry machine. The garage parking cost $25, and we could leave the car there after checkout until we headed off later in the day.
We had a one-bedroom apartment that suited us perfectly. The gym and pool were excellent, though a little walk away, and the staff were kind and accommodating. They let us into the room hours before check-in and even came up to show us the heater and get it set up. I’m quite fussy and thought the lounge looked a little tired, but the facilities overall were good.
