The Cambridge Hotel & Backpackers

We had a great week here, and the room had everything we needed. It was a compact twin, but the beds were comfortable. The place is central for bars, eateries, and the shorefront. Residents get 10% off food and drinks in the bar and restaurant, and there are daily offers in the daytime and evening. Do try the Sunday Roast. The staff were super friendly and helpful: Phoebe, Theo, Hili, Liz, and the reception team whose names I didn't get. Special mention to The Boss, Jeremy, who went out of his way to fit us in and made us feel at home. We leave with new friends after a fun, great-value stay, and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

The kitchen had everything I needed, and the bunks were comfortable with good sheets. I was especially impressed by how spotless the toilets and showers were. Security felt excellent too, with card access to the rooms and shared areas, plus steel storage trunks under the beds where I could padlock my things. The receptionist was really helpful, and I felt safe throughout. Great quality for the price, and I’d happily stay again.

I was there just one night, but had a nice stay and would consider coming back. Parking took a little effort, though I managed. The shared bathroom was fine, even if it was a bit of a walk from my room. The shower had good pressure, but the cubicle felt cramped and water leaked under the door because the seals could use replacing. Thanks heaps.

The location worked well for me, with plenty within walking distance and public transport nearby. It was good value, and the hostel side had the biggest guest kitchen I’ve seen, which was very handy. I was there for a few days in March 2026. The older building has fairly small rooms, especially the bathrooms. I’m small, so it was manageable, but the bathroom sink was so tiny I had to fill the kettle from the shower. The room ran warm, and staff lent me a fan. Housekeeping tidied the bathroom but didn’t make the beds. I liked that the bedside lamps had phone charging.
