Bazil's Hostel & Surf School

I loved the surf atmosphere at the Bazils and all the art around the place. The waves were amazing too. Steve the owner explained how to attract Dolphins while out in the ocean, and after a few sessions it actually worked. That was one of the most impressive moments of my life.

The courtyard had a lovely feel, with hammocks where you could rest or spend the evening, and the kitchen was well equipped. We stayed with our parents in adjoining rooms with our own bathroom, and communication before we arrived was good. But the towels had bleach stains. We were there for two nights, and the next day I had to ask for a fresh towel and for the bathroom to be cleaned better. It was improved somewhat, but the replacement towels were stained with paint or bleach too, as if someone had used them for cleaning. The worst part came on our last night. The power was out from about 5pm until 11pm, and the hot water wasn’t turned back on until around 9am the next day, after I asked the manager. Before 9am, I couldn’t get an answer about when our parents could have a hot shower because no one answered the number posted at the locked reception. I got the impression housekeeping was handled by young people who were staying there in exchange for the work and didn’t care about cleanliness. When we explained our disappointment to the manager, he showed no sympathy. We paid $400 for two nights and wouldn’t stay again.

Westport is handy from here, and the place has plenty of character and a nice atmosphere. Some people stay in tents, so it got quite cold at night, and the sheets had seen better days. Still, I really enjoyed it overall. The kitchen and toilets were in good shape and easy to get to.

It’s a lovely place near downtown Westport, with the grocery store and other amenities close by. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and well kept, and the whole place had good vibes. I also thought the surf lesson was great and really informative. I’d definitely consider staying here if you’re going to Westport.
