The place itself feels like a little paradise: lovely rooms, kept clean, and tucked away across the river from the busy part of Santa Catalina. But the payment setup took a lot away from the stay. I had to withdraw nearly $1,000 before arriving, then pay ATM fees on top of the camp's already high price. There’s only one ATM in town, and a 10% card fee makes cash feel almost compulsory. Carrying that much cash also felt like a safety concern, especially when cards are accepted for large payments in most other places. I keep wondering why they’re so keen on cash. The 10% fee is strikingly close to the VAT charged on hotel services. I also had to ask for a receipt two days after paying. They hadn’t given one at the time and said they’d send it over WhatsApp, which left me uneasy about having no proof of payment. Maybe it was a one-off, maybe it’s how they normally do things. There was a salsa night on a Wednesday that went full volume until 1 a.m. It wasn’t mentioned before booking, and I had to put up with it, though they offered earplugs. It’s a surf camp, so maybe you just have to roll with the party vibe and surprises. The Wi-Fi was also hit or miss, coming and going whenever it felt like it.

The setting and the outside of the hotel are stunning, and reception gave us good service. Inside the Junior room, though, we didn’t feel we had much privacy. The big glass doors open straight to the outside, but the curtains didn’t cover them, so anyone could see in. We could also see a security camera through the bathroom window and weren’t sure if it could see inside. There wasn’t really anywhere to change at night without feeling exposed. A few fixtures need attention too: the door handles, lamp fittings, and bathroom bin were rusty. Our shower only had cold water.

The place is really nice and often has good parties at night, but the guy at reception has clearly earned his reputation. Treat people with kindness and dignity and the reviews would be much better. I don’t even know where to start, just read the recent reviews.

I can’t comment on the rooms or the camp, since I don’t know them. What I do know is that the guy at reception is extremely unfriendly. The boards were in really bad shape too, so I’d rent somewhere else.

For 20 years I’ve stayed here, and David, Jenni, Nona, and their lovely staff have always made it feel like family. I booked at the last minute this time, during peak season when the hotel was full, and David still made sure I got my usual room. You step straight from bed onto the beach. The food is fantastic, especially Nona’s secret-recipe yucca fries. There’s a perfect beach break right in front for beginners and advanced surfers, and beach volleyball with the locals at sunset. It’s just what the name promises, an “Oasis” of calm where you lose track of the day and enjoy life. The perfect place to stay in Santa Catalina.
