Honey House

I wouldn’t stay at this hostel again. Some apps say breakfast is included, but it isn’t. A family with a Rottweiler lives on the second floor, and apart from Maritta, the service was awful. I’d return from volunteering around 6:30 pm to pitch-dark stairs with no lights on. If I asked for anything, I got the laziest, most unwilling response. A friend and I could also hear a resident on the floor below having sex. The noise stopped after I told his mother what was going on. I think this hostel is expensive for what it provides. I could find better places for the same price that at least covered the basics. And please check the gas pipe in room 42. Every time I came back, the room smelled of gas.

If I return to Arequipa, I’ll definitely stay at Honey House again. It’s airy and bright, and very close to Plaza de armas and Plaza vea, a market where you can shop or get lunch and dinner. The kitchen has a stove, kettle, fridge, and other utensils. Wi-Fi works well, the shower has hot water, and the staff are helpful and ready to lend a hand. A wonderful hostel.

For the price, it just about passes. I paid 108 soles for three nights, around 28 euros in October 2017, so I’m giving it three stars since I can’t give 2.5. The Wi-Fi was reasonably steady, but there wasn’t a view, privacy was limited, outlets often needed a wiggle to work, and the toilet tended to overflow. It’s basic, though there’s a charming courtyard where you can sit, if you don’t mind being beside the surly abuela, by Peruvian standards.

The rooms are quite comfortable, with a bed, table, bathroom, and kitchen. Marita, the hostess, is a special person who does everything she can to make you feel at home.
