Hotel El Portal Del Marques

I had a confirmed booking through booking.com, made the day before, but when I got to the hotel around 4 pm, they said there was no room. I couldn't get to my email all day, so I only learned this on arrival. They were dismissive, didn't help me at all, and seemed very unprofessional. I had to walk around the busy city trying to find another hotel.

The in-house restaurant served fantastic food, and the rooms were clean. I also found the beds comfortable. The hotel was very nice and conveniently located, just two blocks from the Plaza Des Armas. I had a very good stay in Cajamarca.

The breakfast courtyard music started at 7 am, and the bossa nova felt like a forced wake-up call. City sounds would be a gentler way to wake up. Apart from that, our rooms and the service were great, and the plaza was only a couple of minutes away on foot. We'd originally booked another hotel, but it closed before our trip, so we found El Portal Del Marques at the last minute. I'm glad we did. The room rate was great and included a nice breakfast and free parking offsite. The hotel arranged a taxi back from the lot in the evening and another ride to retrieve our car in the morning. Finding this place made our short visit to Cajamarca much better.

I wouldn't recommend staying here if you need firm plans. I made a booking on July 9 for late August, but the next week they messaged me on WhatsApp asking if I was ready to be picked up in a few days. That was a mistake, since my stay was still a month away. I called and thought we'd cleared it up. Then, the week before I was due to arrive, they told me there were no rooms for my booking and I should find somewhere else. The receptionist seemed clueless and just blamed the booking center. A chaotic booking system, and they cancel on you. Simply horrible.
