A tour company in Arequipa booked the four of us into two rooms here. The worst things were the dog excrement in the middle of the entrance, which we cleaned up before we could get through the front door, the filthy bathroom in our room, and the smelly bed in our friends' room that they couldn't sleep in. There were no towels either. At the desk, a very sweet young girl, maybe 13, didn't know where anything was.

For this kind of hotel in the country, not having a heater in the room isn't unusual. They give you three or four extra warm layers for the bed, and that worked well. My wife and I had booked our Colca Cañon trip from Arequipa and were assigned this hotel. It's a solid place rather than a high-end 5-star hotel, with warm shower water, an okay breakfast, and genuinely friendly staff who help quickly whenever they can. The plaza de las armas, the town's main square, is about a three-minute walk away, and there's an artisanal market about two minutes away that's quite nice.

The room was freezing, the linens looked old and nasty, and there were bed bugs. Breakfast was good.
