We left before spending a night and got back less than a third of what we’d paid through Hostelworld. Since the hostel cancelled our booking as we left, we couldn’t post a review there. I’ve read that this has happened to other people too. After a long, civil conversation, management still wouldn’t give us a full refund, even though we left because of the hygiene. Basic cleanliness should be there even at a cheap hostel. The two staff members we spoke with in person tried to help, but they were passing on decisions made by upper management. I hope they take the feedback seriously and improve their cleaning, but I can’t recommend staying here. I’ve travelled for a year and a half, and this was the dirtiest place I’ve not stayed in. It’s also the only hostel or hotel I’ve ever left early. In the first room, there was a damp, mouldy smell in the room and bedding, and insects in the bed. Women’s underwear had been left on the floor. I complained and was offered another room. At first it seemed better, so we agreed to move, but after bringing our things in we saw how dirty it was too. There were thousands of termite droppings on the floor, bed frame, and mattress, suggesting to me that the floors weren’t cleaned regularly. Our bags were covered in them after we left them on the floor. There were plenty of other live and dead insects, as well as an empty sanitary pad packet. The shared areas were unhygienic and generally run down. Another guest told me she’d cleaned the bathroom herself because it was so dirty. The communal fridge was filthy too and looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in a long time.

Our last day was spoiled by the manager making us feel unwelcome. We had to pay to leave our bags, which were just left in the open lobby, and he kept huffing at us. The Hostelworld booking had been cancelled after our room was downgraded, so we couldn’t leave a negative review there. This was the worst hostel we stayed in in South America. The sheets had bugs, the room smelled bad, and it was very dirty. They’d overbooked, so on arrival we were put in a lower category room. When we changed rooms the next day, the manager scolded us because it disrupted his cleaning schedule instead of apologizing. He was rude throughout our stay, especially to women, ignoring us or speaking down to us.

Jorge and Luis made my time in Lima much more enjoyable. They were warm, always willing to answer questions, offer tips, and make me feel at home. Great Partners Hostel is cozy and clean, in a convenient part of Miraflores near plenty of nice restaurants, and it felt safe to walk around. I had a really great stay and would recommend it to anyone visiting Lima. Thanks again to Jorge and Luis for the hospitality!

The owner treated me so kindly, and breakfast was delicious. There’s something charming about this hostel that makes me want to come back.

I expected to be at Great Partners Hostel for just a week, but ended up staying nearly two months. The staff were the friendliest and most helpful I’ve met on all my travels. Estelle’s breakfasts were the best I’ve had at any hostel, and cooking them was the highlight of my mornings. Pedro taught me Spanish for free, taking me from knowing almost nothing to being able to have conversations. When it was time to go, Manuel went out of his way to get me to the bus station on time. It feels like a family here, not just somewhere to sleep. You’ll feel welcome right away, eat great food, and may find yourself staying much longer than planned. If you’re coming to Lima, don’t think twice.
