We had a wonderful view over the bay from our second-floor room. There are two short flights of stairs, about five steps each. A market, liquor store, tourism office, and a couple of tourist and photo spots are all walkable. The couple who run the place are lovely, warm, and friendly. Google helped us with the language, and one of the owners speaks English. We stayed two nights. They arranged airport pickup and return for a reasonable per-person fee. Breakfast is continental style each day, and dinner is available too, with generous portions and a good mix of protein and carbs. It was very economical, and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. They even greeted us with fresh leis for our honeymoon, such a sweet and much appreciated gesture. A few things I noticed: there’s no phone or TV in the room, but there is a communal fridge. Towels are provided, though not washcloths. The bathroom sink has cold water only, but it wasn’t freezing and the shower does have hot water. There’s no screen door on the patio, as seemed customary in Tahiti too. They ask guests to conserve water in the shower by wetting, soaping, and rinsing instead of leaving the water running, and to take shoes off indoors.

Pension Mave Mai is a humble, lovely place right in town. Kua and Toriki were kind, friendly hosts who knew the area well. We enjoyed sitting on the patio to take in the view and walking down to the nearby beach. A guesthouse was a new kind of stay for us, but the welcoming people made it easy to settle in. It’s a great spot to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Honestly, most of the staff seemed miserable and couldn’t have been less helpful. Mate was the exception: he was quite nice, picked us up at the airport on time, and made the drive pleasant. The rest could at least smile or say hello. It got so bad it was funny.

Jean Claude and his family made this pension a pleasant place to stay, and they greeted us with tiare necklaces. For the room and breakfast price, it’s good value. People expecting more than average luxury might be disappointed, though: the bedroom is basic and the bathroom could use some refurbishment. If, like us, you’re out all day exploring Nuku Hiva and come back tired enough to just catch a few winks, those downsides matter less. This island is for exploring, and you can leave the luxuries for other islands. Tip: the fruit and bread at breakfast are delicious, but if you want a change, pick up ham and eggs at the magasin and add scrambled eggs and ham to your breakfast.

Jean Claude was especially helpful and nice, and the staff were friendly overall. The rooms were tidy and clean, with a private bathroom, warm water, and a nice harbour view. Thanks for everything!
