The rooms are cozy and nice, and the Polynesian staff are very sweet. We loved the New Year's feast and fireworks. But the mosquitoes are relentless, and you'll absolutely need a rental car. We stayed at six resorts during our five weeks in French Polynesia. The others all sent us off with a shell necklace and a warm goodbye. Here, the owner hauled our bags to the car and barely said goodbye. We're a friendly, polite couple, so the chilly farewell felt odd. After paying close to $4,000 USD for four nights, there was no necklace or warm send-off. The bill also had $60 in egg charges even though breakfast was included. Surprise. They added a $20 fee for six small coffee pods we'd requested because we skipped housekeeping for several days, so the pods hadn't been restocked. The charge was reversed, but checkout got awkward. The $4k I'd just paid didn't make me want to run back to the room and “return them” when the owner asked. The owner also recommended kayaking to the motu across from the hotel, and we got the worst sunburns of our lives. Ouch. Consider reading about the history of that motu before snorkeling around it. There were some nice parts to our stay, but small gestures, or the lack of them, really stick with guests.

We had a great stay in the renovated Lagoon bungalows. They were cozy and relaxing, with a wonderful ocean view. The restaurant was just as good, with excellent food, though vegetarians don't get much variety. A big thank you to Arnaud, Cédric, and everyone for making us feel so welcome. Everything was perfect!

The owner and staff were warm and welcoming, the beds were comfortable, and having a foot wash outside the bungalows was a nice touch. There was also a great Polynesian music and dance show once a week. Our beachfront bungalow had shutters instead of glass windows, and they didn't close all the way. There wasn't much privacy, and we could hear everyone walking by. It might be better if you're in a bungalow farther from the beach. The food was mediocre. The fish was overcooked, the menu felt more French than Polynesian, and there was no fresh fruit or vegetables. The beach was fine, but the water by the hotel was very shallow, with little to see while snorkeling. They can arrange tours, but the descriptions weren't quite right. We expected boat pickup and drop-off, but they picked us up by boat and then put us in a taxi for a 45-minute drive home. We also expected to snorkel with the sharks, but ended up sitting on a boat watching other people do it.

The host was welcoming and helpful, and they can plan your visits, rent you a car, and arrange airport transfers right at the hotel. It's a boutique place with the feel of a luxury bed and breakfast. The rooms and bungalows are spacious, clean, and charming, with attention to detail everywhere. The restaurant food is excellent. Highly recommended.

The meals on the half pension plan were as good as a fine French bistro, and every dish was delicious. The drinks were great too, try the Mango Bellini! Opoa Beach Resort has the amenities and luxury of a five-star resort but still feels intimate. We loved the ocean views, private dock, and snorkel gear available on site. We'd highly recommend it. Thanks, Arnaud and Cedric!
