Dayon Hostel

The staff were lovely and kind, but the cleanliness at this hostel was nowhere near good enough. The shared showers were filthy and looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in months; the toilets were only a little better. Our private room had bunk beds, and the upper one was difficult to reach and felt unsafe, with no railing and a concrete floor underneath. The pillows in our room were covered in mold. We stayed five days and the room wasn’t cleaned once. We ended up leaving our bon outside so they would empty it. This place has the potential to be lovely, but the cleaning standard needs to improve.

The rooftop was pleasant, the coffee was good, and there was free drinking water, though it was usually warm rather than chilled. The hostel is functional, but the mattress was very firm and dipped noticeably in the middle, making sleep less comfortable than expected. Wall sockets didn’t hold plugs securely, so charging devices was unreliable and inconvenient. Bathroom cleanliness was below an acceptable standard. There was a thick layer of grime on the shower floors in the men’s bathrooms, and bidet water regularly spread across the toilet floors. The bathrooms need a proper deep clean each day, with more frequent cleaning touch-ups throughout the day as well. I’d also prefer checkout at 12:00 instead of 11:00. For a small hostel with a fairly basic setup, the earlier time feels unnecessarily restrictive.

The rooms were good value for money, and the bar prices were reasonable. Reception promised to book a van for our airport drop, and it arrived on time and took us according to schedule. Thanks to the whole Dayon team at the hostel. A special mention for John, one of the kindest people I met in Coron. He helped with details and showed me how to check weather conditions in the Philippines. Dayon is one of the best hostels in Coron.

The staff and location are lovely, but getting a decent sleep is tough here. There’s a lot of road noise and cockerels, and the cleaning staff come into the room around 06:00-06:30 to access and clean the toilets and showers and empty bins. That process is noisy and needs to happen at a more reasonable time. I’m a heavy sleeper, so that says something. Good place, just not if you want to sleep past 06:00.
