A good fit for a few nights on a budget. There’s a roomy lobby, but no lift, so hauling heavy bags upstairs is a pain. Parking is scarce, partly because shop owners in the building leave their cars there, so it works better if you don’t drive. My room was large and clean, with an open cabinet for luggage. The bed didn’t feel very clean, though, and I got itchy the first night, so I sprayed alcohol over it. In the bathroom there were two soaps but no shampoo. The heater worked fine, and there’s no exhaust fan, just a small high window. It does have a tabo, which is handy.

On my first visit, I stayed three nights after my usual hotel was full. There was an Iron man conversation in town that weekend, and the front desk was accommodating even though I arrived without a reservation. The room was very clean, and its single bed was more comfortable than beds at most hotels in this class. Breakfast was included in the price for only certain rooms. My only real difficulty was learning my room was on the third floor with no lift. For the second and third nights, they moved me to the first floor. Mostly because of the staff, that stay was very pleasant. My second visit was the opposite. The rate had changed and was almost double, and the clerk at reception was surly and argumentative. I felt like she thought she owned the hotel, and asked her to be more polite to customers. She did connect me with the manager, and I got some reduction in the rate. Even so, it was a very unpleasant stay and I won’t return.

I’ve stayed here three times in a row for business and would come back again. It’s a newer, quiet place where I can rest without loud noise. Although it’s outside the city proper, central Davao City is only about a kilometer away. There’s a nearby restaurant with cheap food that’s nicely served and tastes good.

The room is small, but it’s hygienically clean, and the receptionists are hospitable and great. It’s a good budget hotel. An elevator would be a welcome addition.

My first stay at North Zen was lovely, but the second time around the room seemed old and smelled old too. Some of the lights didn’t work, and the place had a creepy feel. I didn’t think the price was worth it.
