I really enjoyed the homey feel here. It’s clean and comfortable, with a kitchen, armchairs, and shared areas where you can relax. Lisel, the owner, is kind, caring, and very helpful. She invited me to try her traditional fish cooked in coconut milk, and we had some really interesting conversations. The place is right in the middle of town, so it’s easy to get a more local, real experience, and the whale shark tourist center is just 3.5 km away. It’s also inexpensive. Let’s support local businesses and Filipino people.

I came back to Legazpi for a second visit, then headed to Donsol after a couple of nights there. I’d originally planned to go on to Masbate and then Cebu, but stayed in Donsol for one night instead. A friend had suggested it when I was planning to swim with whale sharks. I’d done that in Oslob a few years ago and wanted to understand what ethical whale watching meant. My host said most visitors come for the whale sharks, but there are plenty of other natural sights around here too, including waterfalls, beaches, meadows, and friendly kids. There are beautiful girls around as well, though I never tried to meet any, lol. Ate Leizl is very kind, in my opinion. If you buy groceries, she may cook for you. If you speak nicely with her, she may offer you a drink or two. And if you offer to help her with something, she may give you a ride to an interesting place. I use “may” because she explained that helping guests depends on her schedule and how many people are staying at the time. She rents motorcycles, and gives a discount if you rent one for three days or longer. Her place is very cheap, so why not try some of these while you’re there 😜: 1) San Rafael Falls 2) San Rafael Fish Sanctuary, where she rents masks and fins 3) Donsol Bay 4) Jovellar Underground River 5) Busay falls 6) Karangahan falls 7) Nag Aso hot stream 8) Balanagon black sand beach You could also play soccer with the kids next door. She mentioned that some past guests had done charity work for people in a nearby slum, so you could be a philanthropist too. I’d love to come back and explore some of the other islands I accidentally missed.

The host’s warm hospitality and local tips made the stay memorable and gave it a personal touch. The homestay met my expectations: it was clean and cozy, with convenient amenities and a welcoming feel. A comfortable place for a getaway.
