We were heading straight to Guimaras, but stomach trouble forced Michel and me to stop in Iloilo. We came across Balai Lawaan by chance, without a reservation, and the staff were very accommodating. Since it's close to the Ceres Bus Terminal, the location worked perfectly for us. We chose the smaller, cheaper room, but it never felt like we were getting the lesser option. The room was nicely decorated, with the feel of a quaint spot on the Greek islands or aboard a ship or yacht. The air conditioning was quiet and effective, and everything was very clean. There was also a little sitting area outside our room with enough airflow to make staying in the house complex comfortable. The owner was attentive and caring when she learned why our stay was unplanned. She even offered to help with our laundry, which wasn't really necessary but was very kind. Breakfast was included and delicious, with local choices. I tried the dried tiny fish, which I was told comes from the island, and can recommend it. From the house, it was convenient to take a jeepney to the city center and many historic houses, parks, churches, and museums. The cats in the house were an extra treat for us, since we love cats. We picked this quiet place because we’d be working remotely, and my husband and I had a lovely six-night stay. It felt like a second home. We enjoyed all the breakfast options, especially pinindang with spicy suka, which I’d recommend. Renting their motorcycle was really convenient, too. Ms Anj and the staff were responsive and very accommodating.

The cozy place felt like home during our three nights with my mom and friends. It was centrally located, and Ms Anj and her family made us feel very welcome and looked after. We had an amazing time and would definitely come back to Balai Lawaan on our next visit to Iloilo.

Balai Lawaan felt like a home away from home during our six-night stay. Ms. Anj, her family, and the staff were so welcoming, and the service was excellent. Our room was clean and well maintained. They also let us rent a motorcycle to explore Iloilo. We’ll definitely stay here again when we’re back.

I had a peaceful, pleasant stay at Balai Lawaan. It’s not far from the city center, but set away from the noise, which suited me. My small room had air conditioning and a private bathroom, and was enough for a solo traveler. They provided towels and toilet paper, but no other toiletries, so bring your own. They offered me breakfast even though I wasn’t sure it came with the room. Anj was an accommodating host who made it easy to communicate and helped me plan a city day tour. She also suggested museums beyond the ones already on my itinerary. I felt secure throughout the stay, right through checkout, and would highly recommend booking here in Iloilo.
