Mactan Newtown is a modern, self-contained beach condominium community built by Megaworld, and it feels like a relaxing place to stay near the airport. It has proper sidewalks and pedestrian lanes, and isn't choked with cars since it's away from the main highway. There are plenty of food stalls and fast food places within walking distance, along with two Gordon Ramsay restaurants. Watson and Robinsons Supermarket are nearby too. Belmont and Savoy are the two hotels here, and they share a private beach.

I came back for my second visit to the area and found good Airbnb prices. I paid $57 usd for an apartment that sleeps four, in building C4 on the 6th floor. The infinity pool and playground were on the 5th floor, and the view was awesome. It's a tourist area with lots of restaurants, a Robinson grocery store, a Watson pharmacy, and a few monuments for photos, all in walking distance. The beach is really nice, but it closes around 6pm. I think it should stay open until 8pm. There are places to drink, but no music bars. I saw one live band at the gated, very expensive shangri-la hotel, but there was no access. There were fireworks for Easter, and I think more live bands could make the area take off. Noise ordinance starts at 10pm, and the outside lights get turned off then.

My room at Mercure Hotel was very clean, the staff were friendly, and the food was nice. They also offer Halal meals. Getting to the beach is easy: hotel guests can use the private beach, and there's a shuttle van, though it's close enough to walk. The hotel has a gym and spa, and there are lots of restaurants and convenience stores around it.

A beautiful, peaceful beach tucked away from the usual crowds. I spent the afternoon swimming and relaxing there. Strongly recommend!
