Horizon Hotel Romblon

The location is private, but getting there and back can be difficult because the road is so steep. It’d help to have a ride or service arranged 🙂 It’s a beautiful place, with several dining areas, including an outdoor one by a pool, plus a gym.

We stayed in the Suite room, and its balcony view was breathtaking, just as advertised. The room was well ventilated and had a mini fridge and smart TV, though the TV could be a little larger. It felt a bit empty, so a sofa or small table would help. The light switches and toggles were confusing, outlets were limited despite the work area, and bathrobes would be a welcome addition. Food was one of the hotel’s strongest points. Room service and restaurant menus are the same, portions are reasonable and prices fair. I’d just like breakfast, especially, to arrive piping hot. The staff were pleasant and professional, and transactions went smoothly. Compared with other places near the city plaza, service here is top-notch. The hotel is fairly new and well maintained, and there’s a water refill station in the lobby. The Wi-Fi was inconsistent, working well until it didn’t, especially when there were more guests. The area had an okay signal for the most part. The hotel is a little outside the main plaza center but still accessible. They offer vans and chariot motorcycles for a fee, and you can also rent a tricycle or scooter. In peak season, more chariot motorcycles in service would have helped. The lobby has room to improve. An open cafe with a barista, pastries or desserts, and maybe a poolside lounge or bar could give guests more reason to spend time outside their rooms, bring in extra revenue and create more local buzz, particularly in the off-season. The food and drinks are already notably good. During our stay, the space felt underused and seemed mostly set up for private events. Having a motorcycle is ideal for exploring the island, though rentals are available. It was a superb stay, and there’s plenty of room to make the already high bar even higher.

The view is obviously great, and being close to town was convenient. But the main problem was the food. Service was very slow, some options weren’t available, portions were an issue, and one breakfast took over 40 minutes. Leaving guests waiting with nothing to eat is a rough way to start the day. Maybe offer coffee and pastries while they wait. There are bakeries in Romblon where pastries could be picked up. I’d really encourage management to improve the food experience. There were ants in the room. I know they’re everywhere in Romblon, but the hotel should try to address them. Some staff were unfriendly, though most of the team were pleasant. The decor felt dated, which shouldn’t be the case in a new hotel. Noise was another issue. I stayed in two different rooms on opposite sides of the hotel. The room near the garage picked up motorcycle noise. A sign asking people to turn off motorcycles before rolling them into the small carpark could help. In the other room, I heard tables and chairs scraping across the floor in the restaurant above. Mats might help with that structural issue. Noise from hotel staff late at night and early in the morning could also be avoided. I didn’t expect too much from a 3 star hotel, but some of these issues could be tackled and the stay would be much better.
