We left and found a hotel around the bend that was much cheaper and far better. We’d booked this place because we wanted to see the whale sharks the next day, but the bathroom leak had flooded the room. The walls and floors were dirty, there was no Wi-Fi, and the AC barely worked. When we raised the problems, the staff brushed us off and didn’t seem to care.

The only real plus was how close it was to the whale shark activity. Inside, the bed was uncomfortable, the toilet had no water, there was no soap, and the old AC was really loud. The door wouldn’t lock, and the area was noisy. At 2:30am, someone from the hotel woke us to ask whether the car downstairs was ours. It wasn’t.

The trip starts from Oslob, where boats are ready to take visitors out to watch and swim with the whale sharks. Small boats bring you to the viewing area, and fishermen attract the sharks by feeding them shrimp. It’s very well organized, and swimming so close to these huge, beautiful creatures is a great experience.

When I arrived, I wondered if the hotel had shut down. There was nobody there, no door, and no counter. The room was filthy, with bugs and ants everywhere, and big holes in the walls let more bugs fly in. The toilet water looked cloudy white, and there was no hot water. Don’t stay here. Some of the decent-looking photos in the reviews are from the hotel next door.
