Chilli Hostel

I appreciated having a separate bathroom from the room, and the kitchen was available for everyone to use. The place was clean and the staff were good. Thanks for the two nights.

Long-term guests seem to take over the lockers and kitchen, and other shared facilities too. They show little regard for travelers, talking loudly and making a lot of noise as they come and go frequently. They’re rude, and don’t make travelers feel welcome.

The kitchen has great facilities, and we slept well during our one-night stay. The location worked well for us: there’s a tram stop right outside, and the main train station is an 11-minute walk away. I’d have felt more comfortable if the dorm door could be locked. Some of the other guests seemed odd and unfriendly, which gave the place an uncomfortable atmosphere, though that isn’t the hostel’s fault. I wouldn’t recommend it to a woman traveling alone.

I picked this hostel first because travel vloggers I follow had mostly good experiences here. It’s fairly priced for the area, and both the old town and Wrocław Główny are a 10-15 minute walk away. The photos online match the hostel. The kitchen and lounge were fine, though it had all the kitchen supplies except a kitchen towel. I didn’t like the toilet paper, so I used my own. The night was the main problem. A woman I didn’t know came into our dorm around 5 or 6 a.m., switched on the lights, and tried to take my backpack right in front of me. I guess she was drunk. I don’t know whether she had our passcode or got in by trying codes. There’s a camera above the room entrance, but I doubt they actually use it unless something more serious happens, like someone losing their belongings. There wasn’t anyone at the desk around the clock. Maybe the assistant was away or in the washroom that night, but my WhatsApp messages got no reply that morning or afternoon. When I asked him in person whether he knew about the incident, he said, “the woman?” So he knew, perhaps because one of my roommates had reported it. First, speaking subjectively, I felt he was using “I don’t speak English” to get out of dealing with it, with no real thought of fixing the problem. He had checked me in on my first day and shown me the amenities, and had said then that his English wasn’t good, so I tried not to judge him based just on my personal view. I’m talking about the problem itself. The other people seemed pretty normal, like people I’d seen at work, not especially talkative or outgoing, and focused on their own things. You might see them in the lounge, on the corridor sofa, or at a table inside the room. My room smelled a bit like mosquito repellent when I first walked in. It was bearable, and I later thought it might be coming from some of the bed blinds, though maybe it was just my room. If that incident hadn’t happened, I think this could have been a fair to good stay. I’d switch to another hostel right away if I found another good deal with good internet and cleanliness, but for now I couldn’t find one, so I stayed here.
