Our friend booked for the three of us, and the place turned out to be a welcome surprise. The atmosphere was great, and check-in and checkout were super easy with the instructions they sent ahead. The bathroom was beautiful, with toiletries and towels included. We slept comfortably, with A/C running, privacy curtains, and no noise from other guests or the street. The ferryport and main area for businesses and restaurants are within an easy walk, though there's a bit of an uphill stretch. Bring an extension cord or ask for one, since there aren't many plugs for charging electronics. One thing to know, though: there's another hotel next door with windows and balconies facing El Navegante. When we were outside, we noticed a strong MJ smell coming from that side, so we went back to our clean-air room. This may happen.

Culebra is a great place for sun and beaches in Puerto Rico, and El Navegante Hotel is well placed if you want to stay in the main commercial area. But our two-night stay was horrifying. The rooms were very basic, with uncomfortable mattresses, low-quality linen, and cleanliness that seemed questionable. They weren't serviced during our stay, and reaching someone for help was a real obstacle course. The hotel's description was also plainly inaccurate: there were no balconies or sea views. Why mislead guests? In December, we paid nearly USD 500 per room per night for a deeply unpleasant experience, and it absolutely wasn't worth it. The owners of El Navegante Hotel clearly take advantage of the limited accommodation in Culebra. Only people desperate for somewhere to stay would pay that much for lodging conditions that are highly questionable at best.

Norma was great about fitting us in when we asked at the last minute. The room was comfortable and had a lovely view of the harbor, and the downtown location made things very convenient.
