Calizo Vip Guest House

We couldn't sleep because the room smelled musty and felt damp, and we left feeling uncomfortable about the environment. We had booked four nights at Calizo VIP Guest House but stayed only one. The room was essentially a basement space, with visible condensation on the walls and a strong musty odor. I sent the owner photos of what appeared to be mold and excessive moisture, but the property gave us no refund directly. The only refund came through Expedia. We paid out of pocket to move to El Conquistador Resort, which was absolutely 1000x better: clean, properly ventilated, and what we expected from a vacation stay. It's disappointing to see this property labeled “VIP” on Expedia; based on our experience, that designation is misleading. I'd strongly encourage future guests to ask detailed questions about the specific room's location and ventilation before booking.

It's a cute, well-kept place, and the owners are courteous and quick to respond. Just remember it's an Airbnb, not a hotel, so there's no housekeeping. You also can't walk to much from the location, especially at night.

We often found ourselves relaxing in the lovely, calming courtyard and our patio. The colorful place is enclosed, and it can feel romantic while still being family friendly. The host was sweet and replied to messages really quickly.

Check-in went smoothly. I booked through hotels dot com and expected a security deposit, so that part was fine. What felt odd was being asked to handle it through WhatsApp on my phone. I asked to speak to someone in person, and they accommodated me.
