The setting has a lot going for it. You can get to the beach, good food, and entertainment on foot, and there's access to the lagoon, nature, and the island's culture. If you want an adventurous stay, this could be the place. The surrounding neighborhood is pretty run-down, though. There are abandoned cars and houses, dirty stagnant puddles in the road, and lots of garbage right outside the property. Stray cats and dogs also get into the kitchen and outdoor spaces. They poop and hang around the entrance, and the dogs bark and can act a bit aggressively, so watch your step. There are lots of mosquitoes and no-see-ums outside, too, so bring bug spray. Inside, the white tile is tough to keep clean, especially with kids, and no cleaning products are provided. The outdoor area gets dirty quickly, and keeping the inside clean is hard as well. There's only a water hose to clean with, and the couch in the bedroom area was dirty. We also had power outages in the house, and there was no hot water. If you do stay, take photos of all the areas when you arrive, including the sheets, and again when you leave.

It's right on the water and really comfortable. The airport is nearby, too.

We arrived at the Nautical Dream House in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, May 26. The owner hadn't mentioned that each bedroom has its own key, so we had to keep track of three separate sets. Later that night, around 10:30 or 11, we came back to a house with no electricity. The owner hadn't warned us about the outage. I called to let him know, and he said it should be fixed in a few hours and that this happens all the time. None of that had been disclosed. He told us to get the flashlights from under the kitchen sink. Seriously? It was a house full of young women, with no power and our phones dying. We left and didn't spend even one night there, but he won't give me a full refund. We also ran into other people who said the same thing had happened to them in that area.

You'll want a car here, and you'll be away from the tourist spots around Isla Verde and Viejo San Juan. Along 187, there are plenty of markets and places to eat. Drinks cost $1-$3, and there's lots of seafood. Try the mofongo relleno al Mercado Indio.

Right on the water in Loiza, this is a beautiful property. Staying here is a great way to see and experience Puerto Rico's beach life.
