Condado Vanderbilt Hotel

The spa was so good I went two or three times, and I left feeling more relaxed than I can remember. The pool views were breathtaking, the beds were incredibly comfortable, and the food was delicious. It’s a beautiful place with a lovely atmosphere throughout. Thanks to Hotel del Coronado and the staff for such an easy, seamless stay.

For the price, I expected much more. We stayed one night through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, and while the rooms and balcony were fantastic and the hotel itself beautiful, the service was frustrating and uneven. The front desk person was dismissive when I called about early check-in. After the hotel later called to say the room was ready, another staff member rudely sent me to the back of the line just to get the key. At the bar, we were ignored and got our own drinks. At Ola, we had to ask around for coffee refills while staff chatted nearby about personal chores. Our bags took over an hour to arrive, and only came after we called. Room service was high quality, and sending up champagne and dessert to apologize for the check-in was a nice gesture. Management promised to follow up but never did. We’d just stayed at Condado Ocean Club next door, which isn’t as grand or high-end as the Vanderbilt, but the service there was night and day: attentive, sweet, and professional. At the Vanderbilt, the luxury seemed to stop at the decor.

We’ll absolutely return. The room and bathroom were nice, though nothing especially memorable, and the room service, turn-down service, and butler were fantastic. The public spaces are beautiful and thoughtfully designed, with a relaxed feel, and the pool areas were a major highlight. Staff across the front desk, pool, and restaurant were great. One note about the room category: our first “ocean view room” faced the middle building and electrical boxes, with only a glimpse of the ocean if you leaned far out the window. They moved us to a much better room, which they still called “ocean view,” though it was really a partial ocean view. We appreciated the change.

We came for my husband’s 50th birthday with one goal: rest by the ocean instead of filling the trip with excursions. On the first day we settled into the adults-only oasis, lounged in the fountain, and had margaritas served from their fantastic Tacos and Tequila restaurant. A hot tub session that afternoon made me feel like ten years had come off my life. By day three I’d put away all my “mom hats” and felt the stress disappear. Our balcony overlooked the main pool and ocean, and we saw lots of rainbows from it. We ate like royalty at Sunday Brunch at Ola, then had lovely Piña Coladas on the deck out front. This really is island time, a chance to unplug and slow down. Condado Vanderbilt is gorgeous, with art everywhere, glamorous architecture, spotless spaces, and a relaxing atmosphere. The staff were kind, thoughtful, and caring. On our last night, there was a free jazz concert right next to the resort, full of local Boricua energy, music, street food, and soulful sounds. It felt magical and romantic, and I’m grateful for such a wonderful retreat.
