My Hotel in Puerto Rico

We live in Puerto Rico and wanted an inexpensive weekend room in the heart of OSJ. We were pleased with what we got. I'd rate the property three stars because I know some people have finer tastes, but for basic accommodations in a prime location, it works. The small property is tucked on a narrow Old San Juan street, just steps from everything. It felt secure, and the interior had bright colours and tasteful art that set a historical mood for the visit. Our room was basic but clean, like a modest guest room in a private home. We booked an interior room with no window, then found there was an opening onto the stairwell. The furnishings were simple. If you need a blow dryer, ask the desk attendant, since it wasn't in the room. Ice is available if you ask too. The walls are somewhat thin, so keep the noise down, though it was nice hearing happy revellers come in late at night.

The place was beautiful, clean, and in a great location, which made what happened even more upsetting. We arrived on March 16, just as the island had shut down. The desk attendant wasn't sure the hotel would remain open, and said we'd get back the unused portion of our payment if we left. We stayed one night, then caught the first flight out the next morning. Once home, we were told there would be no refund. I’d told my friends how lovely the place was, but then had to tell them the business had been dishonest with us during a crisis.

The staff were friendly and accommodating whenever I managed to reach them, but there was no one on site, just phone contact, which made communication difficult at check-in. My toilet wouldn't flush right, the shower had no hot water, and the sink water was cold. Two days later I moved to another room that was properly supplied. For what it costs, I expected better.

We only stayed a few hours, and the room still had bugs, a dirty bathroom with a disposable cup left by a previous guest, and a TV with the volume stuck loud. The cleaning was clearly not good. They'd said someone would be there when we checked out, but nobody showed up. I'm glad the prepayment requirement put us off booking most of our stay here. Wouldn't recommend it, even for a short visit.
