Staying in Curral das Freiras was a great choice for our planned hikes nearby. We were four people in a two-bedroom apartment for a week, with a fantastic mountain view. It was clean and had everything we needed, and our hosts were so friendly and accommodating when we made extra requests as serious hikers. There’s a small coffee shop and snack bar right by the building entrance, where we picked up some excellent sandwiches for our hikes. The local supermarket is also worth a visit if you’d like to buy locally made liqueurs. We had a comfortable stay with superhosts Melissa and Manny.

From the mountaintops, the view was surreal. The city sits among steep mountains like something from a fairy tale, though I never went into the city itself. I’d definitely recommend seeing this as part of a Madeira visit.

A lovely mountain village. There was a fiesta on, and the children had made the decorations at school.

We stopped for lunch and drinks in this pleasant valley in the middle of the island. The chestnut plate and soup were quite unusual.
