Charme 19

The rooms are quite large and sweetly furnished, and breakfast was good. But in summer, the noise from the street makes it hard to get air into the room, since there’s no air conditioning. You’re left choosing between the heat or the noise, which makes sleeping impossible. Even though the place is charming, we can’t recommend it for a summer stay.

The breakfast at Charme 19 was lovely, with fresh, thoughtfully chosen products, and the staff were attentive and kind. They did everything they could to accommodate us, and we’re very grateful. The rooms are spacious and well equipped, and the street is quiet. This was easily our best stay in Portugal, and I haven’t had such good service in a long time. We loved it and would absolutely recommend staying here in Coimbra. It’s in a traditional building in the historic centre, so there’s no lift. I think the negative reviews about that are unfair, since it’s an old town setting. There are newer hotels in the newer part of town.

The rooms are great and the breakfast was very good. It’s in the middle of the city, so you can’t get there by car, but that’s known in advance and there are good parking garages a five minute walk away. I don’t understand the poor ratings that focus on this being individual apartments instead of a proper hotel. If you’re okay carrying your luggage up the stairs without help, you’ll have a wonderful stay.

We paid through booking dot com for three nights but left after one because the place was so bad. They refused to refund the other two nights. It’s listed as 3 stars, but to us the standard was only 1 star. Think carefully and check everything before booking. We believe they paid booking dot com commission to make the property appear near the top of search results. There was no car access, so we couldn’t unload our luggage, and nobody was there in the evening to help carry it upstairs to our room, #6 on the top floor. The room was hot like an oven when we arrived in June 2023, and there was no air conditioning. The water system seemed very old: when someone else in the building showered, we had no water for either the bath or tap. There was also no cabinet for clothes.
