The view is what stayed with me most. Opening those wooden windows in the morning, with the city and mountains spread out below, felt like looking at a postcard. The old house has small rooms and none of that modern B&B feel, but that was part of its charm for me. It brought back lovely memories of my grandmother’s home and felt so genuinely Portuguese. Dinner at the restaurant run by the same older owner was a treat. We tried the huge serving of Ossos, and he told us the story behind a special dish called Pobre, available only on Wednesdays. The whole meal was 9€, including couvert, soup, main course, dessert and a drink. Breakfast was Portuguese too, served at the table, with plenty to eat. There was also a shared living room with a fireplace, which must be lovely in winter. We only stayed one night for work nearby, but we’ll return when we’re in the area. I usually prefer hotels, yet this stay gave me a much stronger emotional connection. If you want a traditional Portuguese home experience, I’d recommend giving it a try.

The room was a good size, with a small table for a laptop, and it stayed warm during a warm February weekend, so we didn’t need the AC. The bed was comfortable enough, and there were pillows in different sizes. The bathroom was the least clean toilet I’ve ever come across. There were pubic hairs on it. Noise was another big problem: we could hear the street, guests in the corridor and the kitchen. It was very loud from around 9am until midnight. Better insulation in the windows and room door might help. For what we paid per night, I expected much better rooms.

The neighborhood was lovely, with a little park nearby and a colorful fountain that looked especially pretty in the evening. The owners were friendly, and I enjoyed the small lounge too. We’ll book again 🥰

The mattresses and sheet hadn’t been washed or changed for days, and there was even a sock on top of the wardrobe. The place didn’t seem to have been cleaned in over a week. The AC also started leaking water at the entrance to the WC. When we raised it with the manager, he said he’d sort things out. Instead, they just turned the mattress over and left the sheets unchanged, apparently hoping we wouldn’t notice. A hotel should never do that, especially during a pandemic.
