Hotel Quinta dos Bastos

The staff were all lovely and attentive, which made the cleanliness problems such a shame. When we checked in, we saw black mould, a dirty sink, a huge ball of hair, and towels with loose stitching. The location is a fair way from town. It worked for us with a rental car, but getting to the centre could be hard without one. Breakfast was simple and included in our stay. If you have to pay for it, I'd eat at a local cafe instead. I wouldn't recommend the hotel.

The bed was badly lumpy, and the sheets looked awful. The bathroom was disgusting too. On a very warm night I tried the air conditioner, but the flap looked so bad that I shut it off straight away and put up with the heat. I could only fall asleep in the middle of the mattress, where it seemed less worn. Cleanliness and a comfortable bed are the two things I expect from a hotel, and this place had neither. It's a shame a property with so much potential neglects the basics.

We got a suite at a really cheap online rate, breakfast included, and it felt well worth the price. The owner and staff were friendly. Breakfast didn't have much choice, but what they served was nice, especially the freshly squeezed orange juice. There might be more options in busier seasons. It's a lovely hotel in a secluded rural spot just a few minutes from Evora, and handy if you need parking for a hire car.

The countryside around it is beautiful, but the hotel didn't impress us. We went in May, probably near the start of the season, and it was quite empty. Our room felt damp and the bathroom wasn't very clean. When we asked for salami, cheese, and ham, what we got seemed like processed supermarket meat and cheese. At other places like this, we've found a much better selection of local homemade food. There are nicer options nearby.
