Breakfast felt like a step back in time, with an old-fashioned table and buffet among the antique furniture and keepsakes. There was plenty of good food, which stood out given how many fresh products on the Azores are scarce, costly, or brought in from the continent. Sharing the table with other guests added to the experience. The hostess is a charming older woman who takes great care to make guests comfortable. She’s so discreet that she can seem almost invisible while preparing breakfast or cleaning. Since she and her husband don’t live at the house, you’ll need to coordinate your arrival time with her, especially if you’re coming late. The house is unusual, and staying there feels memorable. I agree with the other guests about that. The distance from Horta can be a plus. Quinta do Canto, which means “corner farm,” is about eight kilometers from the center by road, or 3.5 km along beautiful paths. A car is recommended. On Faial and most other Azores islands, apart from Terceira and Sao Miguel, buses aren’t something you can count on. Being a little removed may also help keep inconsiderate or ill-mannered guests away. I was on my own, so I had a small room with a narrow single bed near the entrance. I kept the curtains closed for privacy. It wasn’t a major issue, but the mattress felt as old as the surrounding furniture and wasn’t very comfortable.

The hosts and housekeeper were both very helpful and friendly. I was fortunate to have the whole house to myself, and I really enjoyed my stay. It’s an antique-style home in Flamingos, around a 5-10 minute drive from Horta.

You’ll need your own transport to stay at Quinta do Canto, though there’s private parking at the hotel. With a car, it’s a lovely experience: a traditional Portuguese home filled with antique furniture, plus a pretty garden with tables, chairs, loungers, and hammocks. Everything was impeccably clean, and the rooms had air conditioning and complimentary toiletries. Breakfast was generous and delicious. I’d happily stay again.

The only real drawback was the house’s position beside a village road. Earplugs helped, though, and we slept very well. The surrounding garden and outdoor seating spots were romantic, and the lady of the house was so friendly. Inside, everything was lovingly arranged and beautifully preserved, almost like being in a museum. Breakfast had everything we could want. We highly recommend the place and will definitely return.

The woman who looks after everything deserves a special mention. She was super friendly! The accommodation itself is lovely, with private parking and an outdoor garden where you can sit, relax, or eat at the tables. Our room was spacious and clean, and breakfast was plentiful and delicious. If I come back to Horta, I’ll stay here again for sure.
