The location is the one thing this place has going for it. For what it costs, everything else was bad. Our room was on the third floor; there was an elevator, but it was extremely hot and smelled bad. The apartment door lock was broken and kept wobbling. Getting it to work took patience, and then the door would stick halfway, so we had to force it. Inside, it felt like someone's Grandma still lived there, with decor from 2000 and very few kitchen utensils. Water drained slowly from the bathroom sink, so we had to watch it to avoid an overflow. The shower ran out of hot water quickly. The beds were low and uncomfortable. The listing said flat-screen TV, but the set was from 2005, quite small and badly placed, so there wasn't much you could do with it. WiFi didn't work. I contacted the owner, who told us to unplug and reconnect the router, as if we hadn't already tried that. The problem continued. We had just one large and one small towel for the entire seven-day stay. I asked the owner for more, but she left me on seen twice. Communication with her was a complete disaster. I wouldn't recommend this accommodation.

We booked for four people, including a sofa bed, and there wasn't enough hot water to shower, not even for two people one after another. We told the owner the morning after check-in, but she neither came to the apartment nor offered a real fix. Her suggestion was to shower at different times of day. When we arrived, the house smelled of sewage. We opened the windows and contacted the host. She said she'd come the next morning, but never did. The sofa bed had a mattress only 3 cm thick, so it was impossible to sleep properly. The host said she'd come to check the problems, but didn't show up or contact us to see how things were going. Find somewhere else to stay in Funchal! I'm attaching our conversation with the host.

The room was just the right size for us, and for the price it's good value. The little things: there's no outdoor space, no iron or ironing board despite the washing machine, and the WiFi was dreadful. We'd been spoiled by the island's coverage, with 4G practically everywhere. Looking closely at the bathroom cupboard, the shower screen could have been cleaner. Still, only small niggles.
