Pensão Astória

The woman at reception and serving breakfast was super lovely and helpful. We arrived early, and she tried to find us a room that was ready. She also let us leave our bags in the laundry room until it was time to go to the airport. For such a low price, this turned out to be good value. The hotel is right in the city centre, which is a perfect location. The rooms are worn, and the bathrooms look awful, but the beds are comfy and breakfast is included. It’s continental, with two fresh, fluffy rolls, butter, jam, and a hot drink like tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Normal quality, and enough to start the day. We had a great stay, especially for a short visit.

The breakfast lady was so sweet. I had to get up early for the walk, so I skipped breakfast, but she filled my thermos with plenty of coffee and milk and insisted I take bread and jam for the road. I stayed at this pension on 09. January, my first day in Funchal, so I could start my Caminho Real 23 walk right outside Funchal Cathedral. For 35 euros a night including breakfast, my private room with an en-suite bathroom exceeded expectations. It was clean, decent and spacious, with a large bathroom and two large beds. The old town location is great, and I’d give it five stars for the price-quality ratio. Light sleepers should know the acoustics can be an issue at night when other guests shut doors. Reception was friendly too, and he hands you the TV remote at check-in :)

I was there for one night and really liked the stay. The rooms are small, which makes them feel cozy, and the breakfast is nothing special but perfectly alright. The place is very central in Funchal, with places to eat and grocery shops easy to find. There’s a church very close by, so the bells may bother you if you don’t want an early wake-up.

You couldn't ask for a better location. The place feels quite old-fashioned, with simple but clean rooms. Breakfast is just bread, butter and coffee, so there isn't much to say about it. The working elevator is definitely a plus.
