Hotel Quinta da Penha de França

My flight was canceled and I was booked into this hotel. I’d happened to notice it for the first time a few days earlier. It’s tucked away on the hill, in an old Quinta made up of several buildings. I stayed in one of the small houses with just a few rooms. My room was spacious and nice, and I was quite happy there, but everything is very old, including the tiny televisions. It felt a bit like England. The view from my room was nice, though the grounds and common areas didn’t feel especially well kept or inviting. The staff were pleasant enough and I had no problems, but breakfast was very bad, especially the coffee and juice. I enjoyed the room, but I’d have been angry if I’d paid a lot expecting a high-end hotel experience. Knowing what it is, I’d stay again at the right price if I could get a similar room. The newer hotel down by the water isn’t very attractive, but it’s close to the Porto Santo ferry and could be just what you want if you arrive late at night by boat.

My guests Rob & Annie have just returned from a nine-night stay and asked me to leave this review. They thoroughly enjoyed their time there and wanted to thank the staff and management. They were especially impressed by how helpful the staff were and how well they did their jobs. From the Front Desk to Maintenance, and everyone in between, the professionalism really stood out. They also praised the food, especially breakfast, which they said was better than at any hotel they’d stayed in before. They were very happy with the stay overall. The pool is awesome, and the location right on the ocean and the service are exemplary. It’s an awesome hotel with an attached restaurant. Some people complain that it isn’t brand new, and that’s true.

We stayed in the older part of the hotel and would choose it over the newer section again. It had a garden where we could sit outside in privacy. The bed and pillows were really comfy, the room was cleaned every day, and breakfast was delicious. Staff were lovely and helpful, parking was great, and the pools were nice. There are loads of great restaurants nearby, and it’s walkable to town. Great place and staff, we’d love to come back!
