Residencial Colombo

The location is good, but I don't think you'll enjoy your stay once you get there. The rooms smell of sewer, apparently from shower drains that are plumbed improperly, and you may find bugs. Our room had ants all over the floor, desk, bags, and bed when we came back from dinner around 10pm. The night staff offered a can of bug spray or a refund if we wanted to leave right away. The customer service was very poor in my experience. Staff are there 24 hours, but they didn't help with issues, and sometimes the desk phone went unanswered until the third or fourth call. I felt staff lied to management about overnight problems, and management called me a liar to my face. I wouldn't be surprised if they call me one in response to this review. There's a 10pm quiet time, but staff don't enforce it. Management said that if I thought there was a noise problem, I should have called the police. Breakfast was terrible too. Save your money and your health and eat somewhere else.

The location is perfect, and it's okay if all you need is somewhere to sleep for a night. But I wouldn't stay for comfort. The internet was awful: during all three days there, I couldn't keep a 10-minute video call going because it dropped every ten minutes. I complained several times. It's surprising to run a hotel without decent internet, and cell service in the rooms was so poor I couldn't use my phone there either. I worked from the lobby instead. My toilet leaked the whole time. I didn't have the hot water problem I'd seen other people mention.

You can walk to restaurants, shops, and attractions from this place, since it's right in the center of Funchal. For an affordable stay in a clean, central spot, it does the job well. Rooms are basic, with no modern decor or fancy amenities, but they were clean; the beds were comfortable enough and the bathrooms tidy. Housekeeping comes daily, which I appreciated. Residencial Colombo is simple and no-frills, just right if you aren't looking for luxury.

The location is about the only good thing here. I can accept an older room, but basic hygiene matters, and the place was dirty throughout. The floors, dishes, and bathroom all showed clear signs that cleaning between guests had been poor. That's a health and comfort issue, and it makes the property unsuitable for guests. I can't recommend staying until they make serious improvements to cleaning standards.
