Terrace Mar

The beds were pretty uncomfortable, though you get what you pay for. Everything else made for a nice stay: the hotel was clean, well stocked, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The kitchenette had a small fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, stovetop, and the equipment to use them. The rooftop pool was lovely, just a little small. Shops, bars, and restaurants are only a short walk away, and Funchal itself is about 20-30 minutes on foot. If you're bringing a car, reserve a garage space in advance, at €6.50 a day. That wasn't a problem for us, but the arrangement wasn't explained clearly, possibly because of the language barrier. The hotel also set up our car hire, which made things easy.

The breakfast was a real treat, with cheeses, eggs cooked different ways, fish, ham, fruit, yogurt, vegetables, mushrooms, bacon, pancakes, and more. The food was delicious and generous, and the staff kept replenishing it even ten minutes before breakfast ended. Some menu dishes were included in the price, and there was sparkling wine too. Thanks especially to the chef. We got the partial ocean view room we asked for, which I really appreciated. It was bright and spacious, with a little kitchen that had everything I needed. Everyone was polite, friendly, and ready to help. The warm rooftop jacuzzi was lovely in winter, a relaxing way to finish the day. I'd happily stay again.

The rooms turned out to be very spacious, and the bed was large too, though I can't say whether every room is the same. Housekeeping came daily, and the staff were really friendly. At first, the hotel gave me a somewhat mixed impression.

We were welcomed with a glass of Madeira wine and an introduction to the hotel and island. The staff were really friendly and made us feel at home. Our room was clean, modern, and spacious. Parking is free, which is a nice bonus, though getting in and out of the garage is very tight. We'll definitely stay at Terrace Mar again when we're back in Madeira.
