Ancora Park

The location worked well for us, with the beach, restaurants and local attractions close by, and everything we needed about 15 minutes away. Evenings were quiet, parking was handy, and the bungalow's two air conditioners were useful on cold days. We also enjoyed the large pool and the dinner buffet. The hotel gave us a complimentary wine bottle for my birthday, a nice gesture, though there wasn't a corkscrew in the room. The main disappointment was being charged €70 after I accidentally knocked the bottle onto the glass tabletop while unpacking and broke it. I accept that it was my accident, but that replacement charge seemed far too high for a relatively minor repair. There were some other drawbacks. The bed was quite hard and affected our sleep. Clothes left in the wardrobe stayed a little damp, apparently because of humidity and poor ventilation, and insects came out of the kitchen cupboard, perhaps because we were on the ground floor. When we arrived, it was around 10C outside in Lagos, but the air conditioning wasn't on and the bungalow felt even colder. It would have been appropriate to heat the rooms before guests arrived. I hope management takes this feedback constructively.

The dinner buffet was good, and the staff were really friendly. On my first trip to Lagos, I stayed in one of the private villas at Âncora Park and thought it was gorgeous. Having our own driveway was very convenient since we had a car, and the big pool was great. The private rooftop was a lovely place to relax in the evening.

The hotel itself had a lot going for it: a large, nice pool, a decent restaurant and bar, good cafes nearby, and the beach within a short distance. We spent most of our time at the beach. Still, service let the place down. We had specifically requested a room on the second floor or higher when booking, but at check-in the manager casually assigned us a ground floor room. He said no other floors were available, without apologizing or trying to help. The room was smaller than the pictures had led us to expect, with everything in one room and hardly any space. At the bar things were a bit disorganized, although the bartenders did try to look after us, which we appreciated. We went in with fairly high expectations after reading the reviews. The hotel is decent, but service needs work.

The walk to the ocean took about 20 minutes, and watching the sunset over the cliffs made it worthwhile. I also ran 8km out and back to a beautiful beach, though with kids it's definitely a drive. The rooms were clean, but it took until the second night to get a double bed. Pushing two twin beds together to make one was bizarre. At 59, that wasn't acceptable, though maybe it would be at 80. We also made the mistake of ordering pizza and waiting for it. Should've ordered it to the room.
