Avenida Palace

The staff's friendliness really stood out. They couldn't have been more helpful, and the central location made it ideal for exploring Lisbon. Avenida Place is one of the last privately owned hotels in the city centre. It has some faded grandeur, which I actually liked, and feels like a grand old railway hotel, full of charm and history, from the chandeliers at breakfast to the old phone boxes on each floor.

The central spot worked perfectly for us, between the waterfront, the hillside restaurants and the major shops along Avenida da Liberdade. Our room was elegant and quiet, with plenty of storage and its own climate control. Though the hotel is historic, it has been thoughtfully updated with enough outlets and modern conveniences. The word “Palace” fits its spirit as well as its name. We've stayed at many fine hotels around Europe, and this was the clear standout for us, a rare pleasure that brings together heritage, comfort and impeccable service. We arrived at 10 AM, before a room was available. The staff apologized and invited us to have the breakfast buffet in the grand dining room. They took our mobile number, offered to text when the room was ready, and suggested sightseeing or shopping while we waited. Our room was ready at noon. The included breakfast was outstanding, served at tables with linen napkins and tablecloths and offering a wide range of choices. If something wasn't on the buffet, staff were happy to prepare it. From the front desk and bar to luggage help and room care, everyone was warm, professional and eager to help.

The hotel kindly let us keep our room until later on our last day, so we could stay comfortable until it was time to leave for the airport. That thoughtful gesture touched us. Roberto also deserves a special mention for opening the door with such a warm smile each morning, which brightened our days. We had a wonderful, comfortable seven-night stay. The location is right in the heart of Lisbon, with easy access to metro, tram and bus. Praça dos Restauradores and Rossio Square are only a one- or two-minute walk away. Breakfast was excellent each morning, and the staff were consistently kind, professional and attentive. The bathroom amenities and bedding were impeccably clean and well kept. The building has history, but it's run to the standard you'd expect from a five-star hotel, and housekeeping was thorough and reliable every day. I'd choose Avenida Hotel again if I return to Lisbon, and would happily recommend it to friends.

The hotel's own website says the room has a balcony, but it didn't. The place is worn down and feels like it's on the cheaper end of five-star hotels. I'd book a nice four-star hotel instead and be much happier.
