Baixa Guest House

After paying, getting any issues resolved was almost impossible because communication became so poor. The information before booking was misleading, and Baixa Guest House didn't match what had been offered. The whole thing felt dishonest and unprofessional, and I believe the place operates in a misleading way that could easily trick guests. I had a very disappointing experience and wouldn't recommend staying here. Be careful before booking.

The location was great, and the bathroom outside the room was clean enough. Still, the building is very old and poorly maintained, and the room wasn't clean well either. I noticed dust and hair in some corners, and the bed and dresser were old. The bed was also very hard, with no comfort at all. For my one-week stay I got just two new towels, and even the one described as fresh had a stain. There was no A/C, and the fan was broken and covered in dust. It wasn't a pleasant room to return to and relax in after a tiring day. I'd only stay here if saving a few bucks mattered more than cleanliness. The location is nice, but I'd spend the extra $20/night for somewhere a little nicer.

We had a return visit booked, but the hotel cancelled our reservation at short notice, even though we'd been very good guests before. We first stayed there at the start of our travels in Portugal and Spain. Its location is great, but the building is very old and wasn't maintained well. After staying in at least a dozen other historic hotels, this one was in the worst condition. The mattress was poor quality, and I could feel every spring despite being slender/average build. The neighborhood was okay, though a little rough compared with what we're used to on budget trips. I can't recommend the place, so think twice before reserving.

The room was so cramped that two people couldn't even stand in it at once. They'd tried to turn a single room into a triple, leaving 95% of the floor area taken up by mattresses. The street-level door was tucked behind two diners at the kebab shop on the sidewalk, with barely enough space to bring in a small suitcase. It gets so hot that you have to open the windows, but the evening and night noise makes sleep impossible. We paid for rooms elsewhere but hadn't checked out. While we were out, they rented our room to other people, then billed us in full even though we couldn't use it. They refused to follow their own refund policy, which called for a one night penalty. I've stayed at 100 hotels, and that was a first. The rooms and the people were awful. The manager (owner?) is the rudest woman in Portugal. It's as expensive as any nearby hotel, so there's no reason to stay here.
