At 160-170 euros a night, I expected a much more comfortable stay. The city tax wasn't disclosed on the booking website, which felt misleading, and I think a hotel with housekeeping would be better value for that price. I wouldn't recommend Bliss Apartments, and the reviews on booking platforms gave me a misleadingly positive impression. In my view, some reviewers may be less discerning or just looking for somewhere to crash after partying. Although Bliss Apartments is centrally located in Bairro Alto, my stay was far from blissful. The area felt uncomfortable at night, with noisy groups of teenagers disturbing people and leaving litter in the narrow alleyways. There were also people doing things that seemed questionable, which added to my sense of insecurity. The area had an unpleasant smell too. I asked for a lower floor because I had heavy luggage, but was put on the highest landing. There isn't a reliable elevator, and the steep stairs were exhausting. Inside, the apartment wasn't well maintained. I saw dust, and the furnishings were outdated and uncomfortable. Early one morning the door code didn't work. I had to contact the apartment manager repeatedly to get it sorted, which was stressful and inconvenient. The building also has no mailboxes, so I couldn't receive mail, including a postcard from a friend.
The location in the heart of bairro alto was good, but there are much better places at the same price just a few minutes away. The room layout was really weird, the TV was old, the AC was weak, and the bed was uncomfortable. The staircase was very steep and almost felt hazardous with anything larger than a small carry-on. I nearly fell while trying to get up and down.
There was no noise isolation at all. At 3 am we could hear people partying below as if they were in the next room, and people were also screaming and partying outside. We asked the partygoers to quiet down, but they said they were leaving at 5 am. On other nights I could hear people talking above us. The last apartment we stayed in in Lisbon didn't have these problems, so don't assume all apartments in Lisbon are like this. Stay somewhere else. Light came in every morning at 6 because there were no blackout curtains or shutters. The bed felt like a cot, and both it and the cheap pillows were really uncomfortable. The shower leaked onto the floor, and they provided only two towels, with no bathroom rug. There was no smart TV or Netflix. Getting large suitcases up the very steep stairs was brutal. The host was no help with an Amazon package delivery, and there's nowhere at the apartment to receive packages.
The location was great, but for what we paid, this was the biggest ripoff I've had while traveling in the EU. You're better off in a hostel room. We booked a one-bedroom and got a tiny studio instead, with a really unsafe patio. The listing didn't match what we got. The room was very hot and the AC barely cooled it. The lights on the dangerous stairs didn't come on automatically. The bathroom was awful. The shower leaked all over the floor, it was hung so high that you had to climb onto the toilets, and the sink didn't seem designed to sit on the counter it was on. We had to ask for more towels. They were all paper-thin, some with holes, and there were no face cloths. There was a coffee maker but no coffee or instructions about which pods to buy. We got three tiny rolls of toilet paper and ran out, so we bought our own. We asked for these things to be replaced and got no reply. The hosts also refuse to respond in the booking app and only communicate through whatsapp.
Carlos was incredibly helpful, and he's an amazing host and a great human being. The beds were very comfortable, and everything was really clean. There are lots of bars and great restaurants nearby, and the location makes it easy to get to the best of Lisbon. It's an easy walk to the metro, tram, Pingo Doce, and more. Fantastic vibes. I'll definitely come back. Thinking about booking? Just do it!
