Flores Guest House

My room was in the building by the park, where things get lively at night, but it stayed quiet inside. Great value and a really good location. I enjoyed staying there.

The staircase is steep and narrow, and there's no lift, so keep that in mind. Our room looked out onto Praça das Flores, with bars and tapas spots around it. On weekends the noise can carry on late, though the area felt very safe and everything else was fine. Flores is handy for the main sights and Rato metro station. The room was cleaned daily unless we put up the 'don't disturb' sign, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was an OK size, but the bathroom really was small, perhaps because it's in a historic building.

After we reported the shower, they contacted us on Whatsapp the next day to apologize and moved us one floor up. The new room was a little bigger, quieter and had warm water, though the construction was still audible. Moving with all our luggage was a nuisance, but they did accommodate us, so I'd give their service five stars. The water temperature had also been going up and down, which made for an uncomfortable shower. We're here for four nights with our baby and my husband. We were welcomed warmly and given a complimentary bottle of water. Our room was across the street from reception, and the receptionist helped carry our luggage upstairs. The stairs are steep and uneven, so you need to be careful, especially with bags. I wouldn't recommend the guesthouse to someone with mobility issues, or if you have a lot to carry. We booked a Classic Queen Studio. There was enough room for the three of us and our baby's pack n play. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, and there was a small kitchen with a fridge, microwave, sink, basic dishes, coffee maker and kettle. The bathroom was tiny. The shower gel was too watery to use, but we had our own toiletries. The bigger issue was the cold shower. It got colder as I washed, and after a couple of minutes it felt like an ice bath, so I had to stop. My husband called both receptionist numbers listed in the room but got no answer. He went to reception, where we were told each room has its own boiler and maintenance could check it the next day because it was already 9:30pm. It bothered me that no one came to inspect it or offered another room or compensation, so I finished showering in very cold water. There was plenty of noise too. We could hear every step from the room above, especially when people wore shoes. Construction next door started hammering early, and since our unit was at the top of the stairs, we heard people coming and going. The door slams shut. This doesn't feel like a four-star hotel, despite what Google says. To me it's a two- or three-star guesthouse or apartment.

The third floor has lots of little steps, which was very difficult for someone recovering from surgery. We found that out the hard way. Ask for a lower floor if you need one.
