Alfama is the big plus here. It’s a great neighborhood, right by the cathedral, and easy to find your way back. The room was basic and sparse, with just a few small tables and lamps. No fan, AC, or TV. The sheets were stained, as others have mentioned, though the price was excellent, so I guess expectations should be modest. We had no bed bug problems. The bathrooms were fine, the showers worked well, and there was a nice little kitchen for cooking. The room got very hot and stuffy, around 30 degrees at times, making it hard to sleep. Opening the door or window helped with the heat, but brought in noise from big trucks, constant trams, and people singing and shouting late at night. You’re stuck choosing between the heat and street noise. If you’re prepared, earplugs and a sleep mask help when you open the door.
The staff were great, the shared areas were scrubbed daily, and they looked after the old building well. When we asked for a fan, table, and chairs, they brought them quickly. They’re also taking steps to reduce bed bug problems, and we had no issues. The location is handy for exploring old Lisbon, but our street-facing room was noisy, with club music until 2 or 3am. Earplugs helped a little. The first floor has had more recent updates than the second, and you can tell. It’s a good spot if that nightlife is what you want, but I wouldn’t stay again because of the noise. I’m too old for it.
The staff were warm, friendly, and helpful, and the rooms were charming and spacious. It’s in an excellent location and good value for the money. I do wish our room lock had been fixed so it felt more secure, and the wifi wasn’t very reliable.
The location was great and the kitchen was large, clean, and nice. A capable volunteer, though a little hard to find, copied our IDs and showed us to the room. There were two bathrooms on our floor, each with a shower and toilet. The bedroom was a mess: both beds were in poor shape, and one was broken. The bedroom door wouldn’t close. The price was too high, and I still couldn’t tell whether this was supposed to be a hotel.
We were stuck in a tiny replacement room after Liliana refused a refund, according to the people on site. The room had dust, cigarettes on the floor, hair and stains on the bed, and a broken door handle that we had to carry around Lisbon so we could get back in. The kitchen looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks, with damp everywhere and worrying leaks from the ceiling. It was disgusting and insulting, and there wasn’t even an effort to make the stay enjoyable. That was after the first room’s door was broken too, and we were expected to secure it with a cheap padlock. We never got the promised towels, so we had to buy our own. The mattress was awful, and we spent the first night itching. The next night we found bedbugs on the sheets and bloodstains from bites. When we raised it with the people there, the German staff member laughed at us and said she didn’t know what to do. The Spanish-speaking staff member was understanding and tried to help. We called the owner, Liliana, right away, but she said she would only speak to the people at the building, and we heard nothing further. The replacement room had just one bed for the three of us. And when we first arrived, the entrance and stairs smelled strongly of gas. Do not book.
