Sete Quintas won our hearts during our three-week trip around Portugal, from the southern coast to the northern border. We'd stayed in all sorts of lovely places, but this one stood out. Carlos has turned abandoned stone buildings, once flour and olive mills, into a peaceful retreat beside a small river, with gardens, olive and fruit trees, and a pool. Our little stone cottage had a living room, bedroom, and bathroom, and was comfortable and beautifully furnished. It sat right by the river, so we could relax to the sound of the water. Breakfast was delicious in the pretty dining room across the stone courtyard, and we had lovely dinners there too, with excellent wine from a friend's vineyard in the Douro Valley and olive oil made from Sete Quintas's own olives. The owners made us feel completely at home, and Carlos was very helpful with local information. It's a great base for visiting Coimbra and the ancient ruins at Conimbriga. We were warmly welcomed, fed and wined so well, and loved every minute.

Carlos and Marisol are wonderful people. They give you plenty of privacy but are there whenever you need something, and happily share advice about trips, the place, cooking, or anything else. Their cooking is great, paired with wines from private wineries whose owners are personal friends of Carlos. It was such a treat, and we loved spending time with them. The cozy, comfortable room is in a beautiful renovated farm, now a hospitality place, right on the riverbank, with the sound of flowing water all around. As soon as you arrive at the lovely property and meet them, you start to unwind. The place is inspiring, full of natural beauty and a warm, home-like welcome. I can't recommend it enough.

A distinctive spot out in the countryside, and a warm welcome. The house is close to everything you'd want to see as a tourist. Reading by the pool in the complete quiet was so relaxing. And the food and wine were good too!
