The room stays warm in winter, and the heating dries damp clothes quickly, which came in handy after walking around in heavy layers. It’s a roomy stone space, with three sets of doors that help keep the cold out. The location also makes a good base for exploring the rocky village. Getting inside at check-in was the tricky part. You’re meant to use the metal knocker on a gate about 10 meters from the main building, and it was hard to get the owner’s attention through all those closed doors. I arrived at 1415 and couldn’t knock loudly enough, so I left my bags outside and went up to the citadel. When I came back, the gate was open and my bags had been brought along the cobbled path. If you have a Portuguese SIM, it may be easier to call the owner from the gate.

The terrace on top is a lovely spot for a glass of wine, with a view across the whole valley. The rooms are in an old manor house and were immaculately clean. The staff were great too.

D. Celeste welcomed us so warmly, and her kindness was worth a lot to us. The location of Casa do Chafariz is handy, just a short walk from restaurants and the different attractions. I chose it for a night in Monsanto because the rooms are lovely and fit the village’s traditional style. The beds could have been a bit more comfortable, but everything else was five stars. Thank you so much.

The photos don’t match the place. There were no directions and not much friendliness, and the room had no window and few comforts. The bathroom was broken. They also had no MB and gave no information about that, even though the nearest MB is more than 10 km from Vila de Monsanto.

The room was spacious and clean, though it could do with a more modern look. I really liked the woman who welcomed us, she was so kind and attentive. Breakfast costs a lot for the amount of choice.
