São Miguel do Gerês

I had a disappointing weekend here and probably won’t return. The staff were polite and pleasant, and seemed to be trying to help, but most of my complaints are about the owners and the cold conditions. We arrived to a completely unheated house in winter. There was only a tiny heater in our room, though after talking to the manager, we were given a larger one. The bathroom was nearly as cold as outside, and people were eating breakfast in their jackets. The house has a fireplace and radiators, but neither worked. We were told the electricity supply wasn’t sufficient. If guests are being charged to stay, basic living conditions should be provided, or the property shouldn’t host people in winter. The situation felt like mockery. I haven’t experienced conditions this poor in a long time.

The room had a bit of a toilet smell, and the rooms are old with small beds. Still, the staff were great, the breakfast was very good, and the view from the window was beautiful.

There’s no private parking, and a misunderstanding in the booking information led us to choose the place when we otherwise might not have. That wasn’t the property’s fault, though, and I don’t regret staying. It turned out to be a very kind surprise. The old building has been nicely remodeled with a homey feel, good for a simple, comfortable stay. It’s well placed in Terras do Bouro village, in the center of Geres Natural Park. The service was very kind, and breakfast was quite nice for a place of its rank. Good value for the price.

A perfect place to stay. The people were SO kind and generous, and the stay was amazing.
