Casa da Insua is the main tourist attraction in Penalva do Castelo. It's a historical site with a garden, museum, and hotel. I spent 120 minutes there, and admission was 3 EUR. There are toilets and parking, though no bike parking. Buses run from Viseu and Mangualde. Most of the present building dates to the second half of the 18th century. Its first major modernization came in the 19th century, improving the garden and adapting the palace to newer needs. The side buildings served business purposes, mainly agriculture. Its architecture is similar to Casa do Mateus in Vila Real.

The dinner was a real highlight, especially the fantastic food and impeccable service. We tried the cheese and jams made on site, and the 2017 red wine was one of the best I've ever had. The grounds are beautiful, with a museum and gardens to explore. The historic building has loads of charm, while the rooms are clean and modern. We loved everything about our stay.

Wandering through the corridors, you can take in all the beautiful details of this real castle and its in-house museums. We also did the wine tasting, and it was totally worth it. It's a unique place to stay, and everything was excellent.

This was a peaceful countryside break where we could slow down and enjoy the historic setting, agricultural character, and pastoral views. There isn't much to do beyond wandering through the gardens and taking in the landscape, but that suited us for relaxing and reflecting. We enjoyed good Portuguese food and wine and will fondly remember our stay at Casa da Ínsua. I'd gladly recommend it to anyone who appreciates historic hospitality.

The gardens are a dream, and the spacious rooms have everything you need. We found the staff friendly and knowledgeable, and the restaurant is one of the best in the area. The hotel makes its own wine, which I can say is incredible, so pick up a few bottles to take home. It's a charming hotel in a historic house.
