The view over Rossio Square and Castle is gorgeous, and alone makes a room with a view worth booking. Our room was small, simple, clean enough, and tucked under the roof. The so-called en-suite was just a tiny toilet, shower, and sink added into the room. This is a cheap pension, not a hotel or hostel, and you’re paying for the location. Write them an email to get a cheaper price. We skipped breakfast since there are cafés and bakeries all around.
The two things in this place’s favor are the very cheap price and the central location. The rest was grim. You have to climb five flights of dark, dirty stairs. The place is so poorly kept that some slum dwellings would seem luxurious. The shared bathroom for the whole floor was dirty, smelly, and had dodgy plumbing. My room was a musty, windowless cell at the top, with ants in it. A building site outside started work at 7 every morning, and I woke up with 30+ bites all over my body. When I told them about the problem, they didn’t even apologize. Other than that, I guess it was fine... If you want to lie awake itching and then wake to a pneumatic drill, go ahead and book, but bring bite cream. You might sleep better rough outside, or even spend the night in police cells after a minor crime. They’d probably be much nicer, and free.
The advice summary is weird: it lists four ratings, 1, 3, 3, and 1, but the summary says 1.5. The official average is 3, when it should actually be 1.5.
The place was closed after a fire destroyed the roof. Don’t go!
