Cidadelhe is a wonderfully old, unusual village, and the rock houses are a must see. Getting there takes effort, with steep, winding roads, but it’s worth it. There isn’t much to do beyond walking around, and there are no restaurants. The church was closed at first, but after we spoke with local people, they happily let us in with the key so we could take photos. They were incredibly friendly, loved chatting, and welcomed curious visitors. They seemed quite disappointed that we hadn’t booked accommodation in Cidadelhe 😆❤️.

The village residents are very friendly, and the walks around Cidadelhe are lovely. The room was beautiful and spacious, with a king-size bed and complete quiet. Breakfast was delicious. I was also struck by the remarkable reforestation project on the Quinta of Arvorest, where the two rivers meet. This is what hospitality should be like.

A lovely place to unwind in nature, with quiet and kind people, and there’s a swimming pool too. I’ve been to Cidadelhe four times now and still love being there.
