Infante Sagres Porto Hotel

Rui and Jorge, the Concierges, deserve special thanks for being so helpful and for their excellent restaurant recommendations. Every member of staff was delightfully friendly, from the reception manager and team to the doormen, and nothing ever seemed too much trouble. We stayed three nights at Hospes Infanta Sagres at the end of a three-week trip through northern Portugal and Galicia, and it was a highlight of the whole visit, among the best hotels I’ve stayed in. The location is central, the building and decor are fascinating, the rooms are very comfortable, and breakfast is delicious. We left Portugal yesterday and will happily recommend the hotel to our friends.

The buffet breakfast was mediocre, though the restaurant in the lobby served good food. It’s an older hotel with a nicely decorated lobby, and our room was spacious with a comfortable bed. The location was very convenient, and we could walk to most of the places we wanted to visit.

The location is great, but the stay felt disorganized and intrusive, nowhere near five-star quality. The internet was unreliable and I had no phone reception in my room, which made basic communication hard. I arrived at the confirmed 3:00 PM check-in time and still waited half an hour for my room. They wouldn’t be flexible, even though rooms were available. The rooms are dated, with really annoying light switches. Breakfast wasn’t included. My Hilton status MAY have qualified me for a free breakfast, but I didn’t ask. After being so disappointed with the hotel, I figured I’d get a better breakfast somewhere else. Housekeeping came in without warning three times, once about an hour after check-in and twice the next morning. The inside door lock didn’t work, so I put my suitcase in the doorway to show the room was occupied. While I waited to check in, I also found it bizarre that some arriving guests were welcomed with wine and cookies and others got nothing. At night the hotel locks the doors, so guests have to rely on a bellman to get in or out. I wouldn’t return.

It was a cool place to stay in Porto, with an old-fashioned elevator that had a couch, which added to the experience. The hotel is old but has a charming, stylish feel. The breakfast was good and the location was great. The reception setup confused me at first: I thought the security counter was reception, but the actual reception is inside the room. There’s a small pool, though I couldn’t use it because the weather wasn’t good. They said they’d give me banana bread, but I never got it.
