The host was super welcoming and helpful, quickly sorting out the power outages we had during our month there, and sharing good tips for the area. River Cottage is on a lovely property with a nice garden in Queluz, right by the palace and a park. The station is a 15-minute walk through the park, making it easy to reach the city by public transport. We stayed in November and worked remotely, spending a lot of time inside the old cottage. Downstairs was quite dark, and it never really warmed up. It was a bit drafty because the old windows don’t seal well. That’s probably only an issue in winter, so we’ll have to come back in another season :)

The park nearby is nice for walks, but there’s no entrance to it from the property, so you have to cross the street. Its pool was disappointing, dirty and only knee-deep, more like a fish pond than somewhere to swim. The town itself felt rather depressing and had poor infrastructure, though the nearby palace is beautiful and definitely worth a visit. The apartment costs too much for what it offers. At half the price, more like a hostel, it would feel fair. The rooms open straight onto the street and there’s no air conditioning. The place is in terrible shape, with dirty walls, doors that don’t shut properly, and a living room sofa that’s past its useful life and just covered with a blanket. One bathroom didn’t even have a door. The kitchen had only a couple of forks and spoons, and the pans were in terrible condition, so don’t plan on cooking here. On top of everything, the host asks for a deposit. God forbid you break another door :)

The garden is beautiful, and the pool was great. There’s a lovely park right next door and a playground nearby for the kids. We loved the place, the host, and the location. The apartment was spacious and clean, with great beds and bathrooms. Just perfect! ❤️

We stayed in apartment 2, which was very clean and had all the amenities we could want. The beds and sofa bed were comfortable, and the washing machine came in handy. The bedroom did get a little warm without air conditioning, but there was a fan, which helped. The quiet setting suited us well. There are restaurants nearby, but it isn’t a bustling or especially touristy town with lots of shops. We took taxis to our activities, which worked out great. There’s a beautiful palace across the street with amazing gardens, but other activities and sightseeing mean going further afield. That wasn’t a problem for us at all. We loved the serenity at Vila libania and would happily return if we come back to Portugal. The hosts are lovely and take great care of their guests. They greet you warmly and offer tips on where to eat and go. The gardens are even bigger than we expected, and we kept finding new things in them. You can walk around or read on a bench in the sun. The pool was a nice place to cool off and relax, with sunbeds and a parasol outside. With only three guest apartments on the property, it never felt crowded. You can have breakfast outside, either from food bought at a nearby supermarket or the nice breakfast they provide, including warm croissants. Our expectations were definitely exceeded. It’s a wonderfully relaxing place.

The hosts Antonio Paolo and Maria Joao were wonderfully helpful throughout our trip, responding quickly to our many questions and offering good suggestions. We really appreciated their hospitality, which made our holiday extra special. The apartment in Vila Libania was clean when we arrived, well furnished, and had everything we needed. This rental complex in Queluz is close to Lisbon but still feels like the countryside. I don’t often give a holiday rental full marks, but this one deserves them. Thank you for a great stay!
