Retiro no Rio

There’s plenty to enjoy around the property, from the horses, goats, cats and dogs to all the different plants. Our hosts were super friendly, too. We stayed for several days in a spacious, very clean apartment, thoughtfully decorated with a terrace and lovely river views. The outdoor pool was a nice way to cool off after swimming in the warm river. A real find for people who love animals and nature, and want a peaceful holiday.

Watching Aquí and Alí, the goats, graze in the morning and again in the evening made the place feel wonderfully close to nature. We also loved the sunsets from our river-facing apartment, the quiet, and cooling off in the pool. One of our favorite memories was the kayak trip on the river, and our daughter enjoyed her horse-riding lessons. When we booked ahead, our hosts treated us to a delicious three-course dinner. We spent three days at Encontro no Rio this August, and the name, “Meeting at the River,” felt just right. Between the peaceful scenery, the Mondego River on one side and green forests on the other, it was much more than somewhere to sleep. The Ploetz-Hessheimer family welcomed us so warmly. The apartments were carefully prepared, comfortable and full of Portuguese charm, with lovely attention to detail throughout the Lodge. We also explored the nearby trails in Vale de Gaios, small villages and authentic Portuguese restaurants, which added a lot to our stay. Encontro no Rio is a real gem. The passion of the Family Ploetz-Hessheimer gives the place something special, almost a sixth sense that we could feel while staying there. Thank you for such a memorable, peaceful retreat. The final kilometre of the drive is a bit of an adventure, but almost everything else was close to perfect. We stayed in June and found the place beautifully located between the Mondego River and green woods. From the west-facing apartments, we had lovely sunset views, and the rooms didn’t get too hot. The apartments were comfortable and attractive, with lots of care put into the details. It’s a peaceful spot, with great views, a refreshing pool and the river close by. Dogs, cats, goats and horses kept us company throughout the day. Tàbua is about 20 minutes away and has supermarkets, shops and restaurants; nearby there are walking routes, a natural swimming pool and pretty little villages. We didn’t miss a thing, and we’d happily return. Highly recommended.
